Ana Mendieta (Havana 1948-New York 1985) is now an indisputable international reference in the art world, her person and her works remain largely unknown. ... The Cuban Ana Mendieta left at a young age - because of the political situation - her country and her family for the United States. ... In these works Ana Mendieta achieved a unique synthesis which related her actions to the form (silhouette) of her body, to land art and to the typical esoterically symbols of religions and primitive rituals.

Her 1998 dissertation, "Ana Mendieta: The Iowa Years. A Critical Study, 1969 through 1977," brought to light critical information about Mendietas formative influences and the impact of the Intermedia education she received at the University of Iowa. Raquelín Mendieta is the artists sister, administrator of her estate, and an artist. As teenagers, Raquelín and Ana were brought to Iowa in 1961 as part of Operation Peter Pan, which sent approximately 14,000 Cuban children to the United States without their parents or extended families.

To this day, Ana Mendieta remains the only Cuban expatriate from the United States to participate fully in Cuban national exhibitions. While deeply rooted in her personal experience, Mendieta's art reveals a passionate desire to connect with a wider, collective human heritage. Her aim to unravel layers of individual and society history and unmask latent ethnic, cultural, and gender biases in society, was to foster greater self-awareness and comprehension of the complex diversity of humanity.
