Grigory Sokolov, one of the world's best virtuosos, who inaugurated the event, was an unquestioned star.

Grigory Sokolov performs, be it a Pavane of William Byrd, a Bach Fantasia, Chopin Mazurka or a Prelude of Ravel, it suddenly sounds completely new.

Sokolov gave his first major recital in Moscow at the age of 12, and came to international attention after winning the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. He was largely unknown in the West, however, until the late 1970s, but has been steadily gaining popularity since. Sokolov records all of his albums live, and has released music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Fr??ic Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Alexander Scriabin, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, among others. He is known for his non-standard interpretations and well-developed technique. Sokolov, Grigory Sokolov, Grigory Sokolov, Grigory
