He was born at Cananea, Mexico, June 12, 1916, and lived in his native country until 1926, when he moved to Arizona and later became an American citizen. Through gruelling physical labor and self-denial, he saved enough to enter Arizona State Teachers College at Flagstaff, where he was graduated in 1939.

Just how far Raul Castro will go in changing Cuba's system remains to be seen, especially since he has vowed that Cuba will remain a socialist country. But if the past two months are any sign, Cubans can expect a government that will be more attuned to their complaints and a leader focused more on the challenges of everyday life than high-flown rhetoric and international politics.
