Roberto Clemente play. I got to see Luis Tiant, Denny McLain and flaky Mark Fidrych. I watched the fielding show Brooks Robinson gave in the World Series. I watched Frank Robinson the player and then the manager. I got to meet George Brett and Pete Rose. I shook their hands at the 1980 World Series before Game 3. I was part of the color guard. I got to watch Thurman Munson and Johnny Bench catch against each other in the World Series shortly before Thurman left us.

You'll note that Roberto Clemente and Jimmie Foxx are in our top 30, thus making them members of The Ballpark Guys' All-Century Team.

national celebration of Roberto Clemente Day will take place at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. Members of the Clemente family, representatives from Major League Baseball, local dignitaries and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ local recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by John Hancock are scheduled to participate in the ceremonies. Roberto Clemente Day was established by Major League Baseball in 2002 to honor the memory of Roberto Clemente and to officially recognize local Club recipients of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by John Hancock.

At age eighteen Clemente signed up with the Cangrejeros de Santurce and two years later was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates where he played for eighteen seasons. Clemente became one of baseball's most accomplished players and premier defensive outfielder. He was awarded the Golden Glove.

Roberto Clemente was right fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates for his entire career. He had a cannon for an arm, and is without doubt one of the greatest defensive right fielders in baseball history. He won 12 straight Gold Gloves from 1961 to 1972, and was an All Star for 12 years. Clemente was a superb hitter. He won 4 Batting Titles, finishing with a .317 career batting average and 3,000 hits. Tragically, Roberto Clemente’s career was cut short at 38 years of age. He was en route to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua on December 31, 1972 when the plane he was on crashed. He will always be remembered both a great baseball player and humanitarian. Frank Robinson began his Major League career in 1956 as a right fielder for the Cincinnati Reds. He is the only player to win MVP awards in both leagues – 1961 while with the National League Reds, and 1966 while playing for the American League Baltimore Orioles.

Clemente: Roberto was a native of Puerto Rico who starred in the outfield for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955 to 1972. He won four National League batting titles and batted over .300 in a season 13 times. He died tragically in a plane crash while flying food, clothing, and medicine to earthquake victims in the Central American country of Nicaragua on New Year's Eve in 1972. Roberto was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1973. Ty Cobb: Ty was called "The Georgia Peach," but he wasn't sweet!
