There is a marker at the old "Piney Grove" church, located near the Fletcher Memorial School, between Gibson, NC and McColl, SC, erected in 1941 by the Saturday Afternoon Book Club, which has an inscription reading as follows- WILLIAM ADAMS Born 1764 - Died 1855, A Revolutionary hero who at the age of 10, refused to give information of hidden treasure and persons to the Tories, son of Jonathan and Mary Robeson Adams, who were the first Adams to set foot on Marlboro County soil."
